Our elementary school curriculum is thoughtfully designed to strike a meaningful balance between faith development, engaging academic rigor, character development and fostering a joy for learning.
In addition to the core subjects, children are taught the importance of being respectful, cooperative, creative, and adaptable. Students will cover the following subjects: Religion, Math, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. Students also experience time with other teachers in Music class, STEM Technology, Physical Education, Art class, and Library. Homework is assigned at the discretion of the teacher. Such assignments are appropriate for the students' age and grade-level. Each teacher has a core curriculum guide (provided by the Diocese) specific to the applicable grade level. The guides enrich the curriculum as determined by the Indiana Department of Education.
The Primary years – from Kindergarten through Third Grade – are particularly important ones in children's schooling. Children acquire new skills and knowledge rapidly during these years. Parent/teacher communication is key to the success of every student. OLGCS teachers share classroom information in weekly newsletters and are always available to answer questions.
Parent/teacher conferences are held once each year in the fall. The academic year consists of two semesters. Each semester is made up of approximately two nine week grading periods. Our teachers are committed to the safety and success of every student and strike an important balance between emphasizing academic rigor, while retaining a nurturing learning environment.
Students in grades 3-8 take the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress (ILEARN) each spring.
